John Moyney VC, better known locally in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary and Rathdowney, Co. Laois as Jack. Jack is my Great Grandfather. He fought in the First World War between 1914 – 1918 with the 2nd Battalion, Irish Guards Regiment. This page is dedicated to him.
As part of my research into my Great Grandfather, I published a number of articles in The Nenagh Guardian Newspaper, The Roscrea People, The Rathdowney Review, The Leinster Leader Newspaper and An Cosantoir – the Irish Defence Forces Magazine, on his role during the Great War and the events surrounding him being awarded the Victoria Cross medal in 1917 during the battle of Passchendaele in Ypres in 1917.
The Victoria Cross is the highest and most prestigious award a soldier was awarded during the First World War. Below is a picture of Jack and his medals.
Below are articles I published in The Roscrea People and An Cosantoir – Irish Defence Forces Magazine.

JOHN MOYNEY VC RADIO INTERVIEW 1977
Extremely rare audio interview with Jack Moyney VC. Jack was interviewed by Christy Maher in August 1977 as part of an RTE Radio initiative for local radio week in Roscrea. The interview was recorded on cassette tape by George Cunningham. I was fortunate to find it in 2006 on a cassette tape, having spent many days trawling through dozens of cassette tapes in Roscrea Library. This tape, which was being held in the George Cunningham Collection of the library could have been easily lost or disposed of as it was not clearly labelled and the library staff were unaware of the interview at the time. Thankfully it was not lost. I was fortunate that Author Mike Rafter, Rathdowney, Co. Laois converted it for me to a CD at the time. This YouTube version is courtesy of Tipperary Studies who uploaded it.
